Los Hervideros

A Natural Spectacle of Lanzarote

Los Hervideros is located on the southwest coast of Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands (Spain). This dramatic coastal area is famous for its spectacular cliffs, caves, and natural tunnels carved by the Atlantic Ocean as it crashes against solidified lava. The name Los Hervideros, meaning “the boiling waters”, comes from the way seawater foams and churns inside the caves, creating the illusion of boiling.

Geological Origin

The landscape of Los Hervideros was shaped by the massive volcanic eruptions that struck Lanzarote between 1730 and 1736, known as the Timanfaya eruptions.

As the lava flowed into the sea, it cooled rapidly, creating jagged basalt cliffs and hidden caves.

Over the centuries, waves and wind have continued to sculpt the coastline, producing a stunning interplay of volcanic rock and ocean force.

Natural Phenomenon

When the tide is high and waves are strong, seawater rushes through underground channels and bursts through the rock with great force.

The result is a powerful visual effect, as if the earth itself is boiling beneath your feet.

The setting combines earth, fire, water, and air in a way that captures the island’s wild volcanic spirit.

Location and Access

Los Hervideros is just south of El Golfo and easily accessible by road from the Timanfaya National Park.

Nearby natural attractions include the striking Green Lagoon (Lago Verde) and the salt flats of Salinas de Janubio.

Tourism and Infrastructure

The site features marked trails and viewpoints, allowing visitors to safely explore and enjoy the views.

The best time to visit is during high tide and windy days, when the waves are most impressive.

Interesting Facts about Los Hervideros

A misleading name – Although Hervideros means “boiling waters,” the water is not actually hot. The effect is created by waves crashing into volcanic caves, making it look like water is boiling.

No swimming allowed – The area is not safe for swimming due to strong currents, sharp rocks, and unpredictable waves. It is strictly a viewing spot.

Nature’s artwork – The rock formations look sculpted, especially at sunset when the light plays on the water spray and volcanic stone.

Close to another wonder – Just nearby is Lago Verde (Green Lake), colored by minerals and algae — another volcanic marvel of the island.

A UNESCO Global Geopark – Los Hervideros is part of the Lanzarote UNESCO Geopark, which recognizes the island’s geological importance.
